What You Don’t Want to Miss in the New Facebook Insights

Unless you’re living under a Social Media rock, you’ve probably seen that Facebook Insights has experienced quite the overhaul in the last few months, and believe me, it was incredibly necessary. Insights are now sexier, more intuitive, easier to understand and much easier to act on. Remember everything that you’re supposed to track on your own through A/B testing and external services? Facebook now has you covered, from best post type to when to talk to fans. Here’s a breakdown of what we like most about the changes, and some statistics that you definitely don’t want to miss!

The evolution of the tabs from the previous version of Facebook Insights has been extreme. Where before we could access ambiguous tabs and an all-in-one overview, we now have 6 specific clearly defined tabs that cover everything you need – overview, likes, reach, visits, posts, and people.

Facebook Insights Tabs

The new-and-improved Facebook Insights Tabs

Overview

This tab has gotten some major TLC; instead of a hodge-podge grouping of too much information, it’s a well-designed collection of major milestones over the past seven days. This includes the number of new page likes, total reach of all posts, and engagement including shares, likes, comments, and post clicks. You also get to see what you’ve posted over the last seven days defined by type, targeting (if any), total reach, and engagement, which is great for giving an easy snapshot of that week.

Likes

Predictably, this tab includes a visual representation of your page’s progress in terms of likes. The usability on this page has really improved – using the sliding bar at the top, you can examine spans of between 10 and 90 days at any time over the last three months, with dynamic graphs of total page likes, likes and unlikes per day, and where your likes came from.

Reach

The Reach tab is fabulously detailed; the post reach graph, which shows the total of all the people reached per day over the past month, can be clicked each day to show a complete list of active posts at the time, which takes the guesswork out of understanding the real cause of the attention. The depictions of overall positive and negative engagement can also be clicked to reveal the source of the interaction.

Post Reach

Total Reach of Posts by Day

Above you can see a Post Reach graph for mid-October to mid-November. By clicking one of the peaks, the table below appears and provides a breakdown of which posts drove the people to our page.

Visits

If you’re looking to understand people on your page, you’ve come to the right place. There are clickable graphs for where people came from, what parts of your page they visited, and what they did while they were there. Do people love looking through your photos? Are they eager to learn more about you? Are they primarily looking through your timeline to see what kind of company you are? All the data is there and practically gift-wrapped by Facebook in easy-to-read data visualizations.

Posts

If I had to choose, I would say that this is my favorite of all the new Insights tabs. There are two sub-sections at the top of the page: When Your Fans are Online and Post Types. It’s as though the developers at Facebook asked themselves which metrics we were all keeping track of on our own and started monitoring them for us. The first metric gives you a weekly average of the best time to engage fans, as well as a day-by-day breakdown of when you will see people online. The second is equally important; you get an overview of how many of each kind of post you’ve shared on your page, as well as the average reach, engagement, and clicks. Have questions about the best kind of post to reach your fans? Not anymore, you don’t!

Post Type

Overview of Post Type Performance

Below this section is a list of posts defined by type, targeting, reach, and engagement. (Of course, there’s also the mandatory option of paid promotion, but Facebook employees have to eat too!) It looks like at some point this list will be able to be re-ordered based on maximum Reach and maximum Engagement posts, which will be great for keeping track of your most popular content, but it’s never worked yet on our Page. By clicking on each post you get a thorough overview of each type of interaction, both positive and negative, as well as post clicks and link clicks. So far this feature has been a little buggy for us; the numbers often don’t match, but I’m happy enough that the potential is there, and hopefully Facebook will get around to fixing this data soon. Additionally, in case you miss the virality post, Facebook has provided the “Fans vs Non-Fans” metric so you can see whether you’re drawing in new people or need to try some more shareable material.

People

Finally, the people tab, which allows you to track your fans, people you’re reaching, and people you’re engaging with. This includes age demographics for each, as well as country, city, and language. Want to know how your social media campaign is doing in a specific market? Need to see which users are engaging with you the most? You can check it right here.

Demographics of People Reached

Though we’ll be excited when some of the kinks have been worked out, overall this version of Facebook Insights is far better than its predecessor. If you’d like to check out some information about exports, John Loomer has written some fantastic material about what’s changed at both the post level and the page level. There’s lots of data there waiting to be explored!
